Start and Finish: From Segedenum Roman Fort at Wallsend on Tyne to
Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast
Landscape: A riverside route along the Tyne gives way
to predominantly arable farmland above Tynedale. This opens out to
the rough grazing upland section dominated by the Whin Sill
escarpment. It then gradually descends to the richer pastures of
Cumbria and finally the open salt marsh of the Solway Estuary.

PENNINE WAY

COAST TO COAST WALK

St Bees Head (Cumbria) to Robin Hoods Bay (North Yorkshire)
Landscape: The route
crosses three National Parks: the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and
the North York Moors. It is scenic, but high-level, including some
fairly demanding upland stretches, and visits only two towns of any
real size, Kirkby Stephen and Richmond.

CLEVELAND WAY

Helmsley to Filey
Landscape:
The route crosses the North York Moors National Park to reach the
coast at Saltburn. From here it goes along the North Yorkshire
coastline to Filey, passing old fishing villages and lively coastal
towns. Along the way there is a wealth of history and heritage to
enjoy. Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx Abbey, Mount Grace Priory,
Gisborough Priory, Whitby Abbey and Scarborough Castle to name just
a few special sites.

DALES WAY

Ilkley (West Yorkshire) to Bowness-on-Windermere (Cumbria)
Landscape: Following several riverside paths,
the walk offers a scenically attractive route from urban West
Yorkshire to the Lake District, which any reasonably fit family can
undertake in a week's holiday. Although not always well served by
public transport the Way, by following natural and sometimes ancient
lines of communication, passes through many villages.

THAMES PATH

Location: The Thames Path follows England's best known
river from its source in the Cotswolds through several rural
counties and on through the bustle of the City of London.
Start and Finish points: The Thames Source, nr. Cirencester, Gloucestershire to the Thames
Barrier, nr. Greenwich
Landscape: On its way the Trail passes peaceful
water meadows rich in wildlife, historic towns and many lovely
villages. Easy to reach by public transport, the Thames Path is
accessible for walkers of all ages and abilities.

Winchester to Eastbourne
Landscape: Wide grassy or flinty tracks on
chalk downland, mostly grazed by sheep on the hills with arable
crops below. 100% within Sussex Downs and East Hampshire designated
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, soon to become a National Park.
The western part of the downs is rolling farmland, the West Sussex
Downs are dominated by a steep, often wooded scarp with views across
the Weald below, while the East Sussex Downs are classic open
grassland running down to the sea cliffs.
