ROUTE DESCRIPTION (updated 6 January 2012)

At some points on this walk you may see some Academy arrows, either screwed to posts etc. or stuck on road signs. These are markers for The Academy Four Day event in September. The red, blue and green arrows should be ignored. There are several times when the yellow arrows point the way in this walk, but they are NOT markers for this walk, so please keep to the route description. gnore all larger, circular signs – these are for the cycling event in September.

Leave The Academy and take the road opposite, church on the left. Pass a pond on the right then take the footpath on the right signposted Barrow Green/Burthorpe Green. There is a cemetery on the left. Continue with hedge on right and open land to the left.
At junction, follow yellow arrow straight on, field on left, hedge on right.
Continue ahead into next field In the corner of this field, go straight on, following yellow arrow.
In about 100 metres, where track divides, follow the yellow arrow to the left. Pass between houses, garages on the right, to the road. (1.2k)
Cross the road and follow the tarmac footpath between houses. There is a pond to the right then the left. xit the path with a green/ main road in front of you.(1.4k)
Turn left along pavement. The road sign indicates Saxham 2, Bury St. Edmunds 6.

Q1. What is the name of the first white house on the left, after the CDC shop?

Pass The Weeping Willow pub on the right.
In about 300 metres, take restricted byway (Mill Lane) to the left. (1.7k)

Q2. On the left beside a post Box and on the first junction left: to whom is the seat dedicated?

At the end of the restricted byway, turn right, to Orchard Way. Follow footpath sign n the left to Burthorpe Green. Continue on path to reach road. (2.5k).
Cross road and go straight ahead, passing sign saying “UNSUITABLE FOR HEAVY VEHICLES.” As the road becomes a track, opposite the last but one bungalow on the right, follow footpath sign on left. (2.7k)
At immediate junction, bear right – ignore restricted byway to the left – walking between hedges. Pass allotments on the left.
Leave “covered” area: path has a hedge on the left and a field on the right. (3.0k)
After about 100 metres, in the corner of the field, the path goes into a second field, hedge now on the right.
Path bends right. In the corner of the field, follow yellow arrow straight ahead into wood, and follow clear path. On leaving the woods, by a white pole on the right, bear right then left. Go along clear path, hedge on left, field on right (3.7k).
In corner of field, follow path straight on into the woods, and continue to road. (4.4k)

Q3. What is the name of the house opposite?

Turn left, going down hill then uphill to Symonds Industrial Estate. (5.5k) The road bears left then right by a Farm Traffic Sign, with a weighbridge on the right. Continue ahead between the buildings.

Q4. On the left, there is a large green build, with reserved parking spaces in front of it. Who has the final place on the left?

As you leave the Estate, the road becomes narrower and bears to the left, with the railway and A14 on your right. Continue ahead to the road junction. (6.3k)
Turn left, signposted Barrow and Denham. The lane goes down hill then up hill.

Q5. Half way up the hill, on the right hand side, there is a white pole with a red top beside a gate: what is the number on the black column to the left of the gate?

Pass through a double bend. At junction, turn left, signposted Burthorpe Green (8.1k)
After about 150 metres, on the right hand side, there is a footpath sign. Cross plank bridge. About 10 metres to the right, the cultivated part of the field gives way to a grassy area. Where these two meet, there seems to be an attempt to reinstate a footpath. It is not particularly clear, but it is easier to walk across the grassy section.
Once across the field, pass through clear gap in hedge about 20 metres to the left, and follow path through the woods. When you reach the lake, follow the yellow arrow to the right, the lake on the left. Go straight ahead through a tunnel of bushes. Continue until the path almost reaches the road, then turn left following a yellow arrow, as the path runs parallel to the road.
When you reach the corner of the field, bear left following the yellow arrow uphill. (8.5k)
After about 100 metres, there is a yellow arrow pointing to the right across the field. Again there is not always a reinstated path, but if none exists, follow the direction of the arrow, to cross the field. Once you reach the brow of the hill, aim for the right hand end of the hedge on the far side of the field, to the left.
As you approach the gap at the end of the hedge, a post with a yellow arrow can be seen.
Once across the field, go through the gap to walk along a wide, grassy track between two fields. When this meets another track, turn right. You are now on the track that you started on. Follow the path to the left of the cemetery to the road.
Turn left and return to The Academy, and the finish.
