CAR PARKING: Free parking is available at the start.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There are some buses from Bury St. Edmunds. There is no railway connection.
TERRAIN: A mixture of footpaths and country lanes. It is not suitable for pushchairs.
REFRESHMENTS: Food is available at the start and finish, but must be pre-booked. Refreshments are not available on the walk.
IVV STAMPS: These are available at reception. Alternatively, leave a s.a.e. at reception, or in the white letter box on the wall opposite the entrance to The Academy, together with entry form and money. If you need to post your entry form, money, books, please send a s.a.e.
TOILETS: These are available at the start/finish, as are showers.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION (updated 6 January 2012)

At some points on this walk you may see some Academy arrows, either screwed to posts etc. or stuck on road signs. These are markers for The Academy Four Day event in September. The red, blue and green arrows should be ignored. There are several times when the yellow arrows point the way in this walk, but they are NOT markers for this walk, so please keep to the route description. gnore all larger, circular signs – these are for the cycling event in September.

Leave The Academy and take the road opposite, church on the left. Pass a pond on the right then take the footpath on the right signposted Barrow Green/Burthorpe Green. There is a cemetery on the left. Continue with hedge on right and open land to the left.
At junction, follow yellow arrow straight on, field on left the other side of the path to the left , hedge on right.
Continue ahead into next field.  In the corner of this field, go straight on, following yellow arrow.
In about 100 metres, where track divides, follow the yellow arrow to the left. Pass between houses, garages on the right, to the road. (1.2k)
Cross the road and follow tarmac footpath ahead between the houses. Pass a pond on your right, then left. Exit the path with a green/ main road in front of you.
Cross the road, and take the road opposite signposted Denham 1½, Dalham 3½.
Continue to cross roads and go straight ahead into Denham Lane, signposted Denham 1½, Dalham 3½. (1.6k)
At road junction, continue ahead signposted Denham 1¼, Dalham 3¼ (2.0k)

Q1. In another 200 metres, Just after Rectory Place on the left there is a post box, also on the left. Where is a later collection made – at 6.00 P.M.?

Pass the deer farm on the right and Denham Estate on the left. (3.0k)
Ignore footpath sign to right on Private Road.

Q2. In about 600 metres, On bus stop sign, on the right, opposite a road junction. What is the traveline number, the advice number for Suffolk?

Pass Abbot Close on the left (3.9k)
Ignore footpath/ bridleway to left.
Pass Abbott’s Barn House on the left.
Just after the Denham Village Sign (you see the back of the sign – the name is on the other side) – at a junction with a road to the left (signposted Dunstall Green, Ousden 1¼ ) turn right onto bridleway (4.9k)
There are Academy arrows from this point onwards, to the finish.
Follow this track straight ahead between fields and hedges, then field on left, hedge on right, for about 700 metres to a gap in the hedge, ignoring all tracks to left and right. The last section goes between two fields, starting opposite the corner of the field on the right. (5.6k)
Go through the gap, turn right and immediately left to follow a clear path across the field.
At end of field, bear left over a wooden bridge, (6.1k), and continue ahead on bridleway, hedge on right.
At the end of the hedge, in the corner of the field (6.8k) turn right (signposted) and pass through a metal gate.
Immediately turn right and follow path around the edge of the field, hedge and wire fence on the right, field on left.
The path turns left in the corner of the field, and goes slightly left around a field. There is a yellow arrow. Continue on path to Denham Castle Mound, on right.
Follow path between wire fences, orchard on the left.
Pass an information board re: Denham Castle (7.6k)

Q3. Who was the last Saxon Lord of Desning?

Go through a gate and bear left, following clear path across field to a wooden gate to the right on a house. (7.9k)
Turn right and then left and follow the lane for about 20 metres. Turn right.
Pass through a metal gate and in a few metres before the next gate, turn right on grassy track between fences. (There may be a lot of deer in the fields). Follow the path as it turns left, fences on both sides.
Pass through a metal gate (8.3k)
Go through a gap in the hedge slightly to the left, cross a wooden planked bridge, and follow path through field in front of you. Cross a wooden planked bridge (8.7k) and follow path through field ahead to road (8.9k). There is a yellow arrow at the bridge. [Or you can go left and then right around the edge of the field, along a grassy track to the road].
Cross road and follow footpath sign.
In the corner of the field, go straight on over a planked wooden bridge. Follow the narrow path between fencing to arrive in Barrow by the pond. (9.5k)
Turn left, passing The Three Horseshoes Pub on the left.
Turn right on Church Road, and return to The Academy and the finish.
