CAR PARKING: Free parking is available at the start.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There are some buses from Bury St. Edmunds. There is no railway connection.
TERRAIN: A mixture of footpaths and country lanes. It is not suitable for pushchairs.
REFRESHMENTS: Food is available at the start and finish, but must be pre-booked. Refreshments are not available on the walk.
IVV STAMPS: These are available at reception. Alternatively, leave a s.a.e. at reception, or in the white letter box on the wall opposite the entrance to The Academy, together with entry form and money. If you need to post your entry form, money, books, please send a s.a.e.
TOILETS: These are available at the start/finish, as are showers.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION (updated 6 January 2012)

At some points on this walk you may see some Academy arrows, either screwed to posts etc. or stuck on road signs. These are markers for The Academy Four Day event in September. The red, blue and green arrows should be ignored. There are several times when the yellow arrows point the way in this walk, but they are NOT markers for this walk, so please keep to the route description. gnore all larger, circular signs – these are for the cycling event in September.

Leave The Academy and turn left. In 100 metres, at junction, turn left, signposted Higham 1½.
In 200 metres, turn right at wooden footpath sign, by tall trees. Path can be overgrown, but is quite clear. Go ahead, hedge on left/between hedges, field on right.
At yellow arrow, go straight on, hedge on left and field on right.
In corner of field, cross wooden plank bridge and continue ahead on path, hedge on left, field on right.
Continue until you come across a yellow arrow indicating that the path passes through the hedge, and continues to the right on the other side of the hedge. This is a wide grassy track. Continue with hedge on right, field on left. (1.2k)
At farm track, with a line of trees going away to the left, go straight ahead. There are now some bushes and some tree on the right.
Continue to the railway. A yellow arrow is there, indicating the way over the railway. CROSS WITH CARE. (1.7k)
The track goes right then left along side a wood.
In the corner of the field, turn left at a post with four Academy Arrows on it, and follow wide grassy track, field on the left, a wooded area on the right. Pass two trees in the hedge – the second has Academy arrows on it.
Turn right between next two large trees and go through hedge to A14 slip road. There are four more Academy arrows on a post.
Turn left along the verge of the slip road WITH GREAT CARE to the cross roads.
Go straight over, ( a slight dog-leg to the right then left) signposted to Newmarket (A14), Higham and Gazely.
In about 200 metres, turn left, signposted Higham and Gazely. (2.9k)
As road bears right, go straight on, signposted Higham ½

Pass Church on the left (3.6k)

Q2 . What are the initials stamped on the gate to the churchyard?

Enter Higham. Ignore footpath to the left. Pass The Post Office on the right (3.9k)
Pass Mill Farm on right (4.4k)
At junction, go straight on, signposted Barrow 3
Q3 On the signpost, how far is it to Gazely?
Follow the lane for about 2 kilometres.

Along the way,

Continue until you see a footpath sign off to the left. (7.1k) There are Academy markers on the post indicating the left turn.
Turn left and follow the footpath sign.
From this point onwards, there are Academy arrows indicating the route.
In the corner of the field, go straight on over a planked wooden bridge. Follow the narrow path between fencing to arrive in Barrow by the pond. ( 7.7k)
Turn left, passing The Three Horseshoes Pub on the left.
Turn right on Church Road, and return to The Academy and the finish.
