TERRAIN: The trail starts at The Jubilee Centre, at the Jubilee playing fields, named in honour of the Queen Elizabeth 11 Silver Jubilee in 1977. It is a riverside walk along the River Lark past ancient and modern navigation and flood control structures and through Suffolk countryside and villages.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION (December 2011)

With your back to the Jubilee Centre, walk across the car park to the information board. TL along the footpath to the River Lark. TL along the river bank, river on right for approx 1.5km to a bridge. TR and cross the bridge (if you look over the L parapet you will see a restored lock now partly under the A11 and unusable) Walk along the road to the Old Bull Inn

Q1. What is the date on the largest chimney on the Mill House opposite the inn?

TR into The Street and walk through the village Barton Mills. At the Bell Inn on the L take time to read the Millenium board.

Q2. What event is recorded for King George V silver jubilee year 1935?

Continue along The Street to the church. At the road junction opposite, TL into Grange Lane and continue to the end. Go through a metal gate onto a grass track; at 2nd metal gate,TR along path with fence then hedge on L; continue to road. TL and walk carefully along the road for about 100m.TL onto a wide footpath which changes to a narrow path with ditch on each side. After approx. 700m. at junction with wide track, TR. Follow track through small wooded area then ahead over a private cross track onto a track between fields. Ahead to road. Cross the road (B1102) with care. TL and walk along the pavement through Worlington, passing the Walnut Tree on L, village hall on R, then just past the Old Rectory on R, TR on footpath. Follow the path then the waymarked route along the L side of the cemetery, through a wooden gate to gravel track. TR and follow the gravel track round into the churchyard, past the church to the road.

Q3. On the R, just before you leave the churchyard is a large memorial to George Wing. When did he die?

TR and walk along the road to the end. TL on a path then in a few metres TR through a gate/stile into a field. Follow the waymark L along the field edge for approx. 100m then TR across the field on a clearly marked path towards a house. Cross a wooden bridge over Old King’s Staunch and through a gate into a garden. (staunch is an old navigational feature of the River Lark). TR and leave the garden by a gate in privet hedge. TL along the field edge to gravel track; TR and follow track to Wamill Hall. Go ahead on tarmac road. When road turns R go ahead on track (broken FP sign), through middle of fields to a cottage. Follow the path along the back of the cottage and along the enclosed Lark Valley Path. At fork, take the R path and walk along the river bank past the cricket field on L, over a wooden footbridge and along the river bank to the road bridge. TL up path to road. Cross the road (B1102) with care. TR and cross the bridge then turn immediately L onto a track. Go past sluice on L and along the river bank to a large footbridge. Cross the footbridge and back to the car park.
