Walk from the Clock Tower down the High Street on left side of road. Bear left under the archway behind The Rutland Hotel. Nell Gwynne’s cottage is on the left and Newmarket Tourist Information Centre (Charles II Palace House) is on the right. At the next junction, opposite All Saints Church, turn right into lane (Sun Lane) leading to the High Street. At the High Street turn left, the National Horse racing Museum and the Jockey Club Headquarters are on the left.

Q.1 What is the name of the horse in front of the building?

At next road junction with traffic lights, turn left into The Avenue. Continue ahead, pass Tattersalls on the right, and then bear right into Station Approach. At junction turn right into Paddocks Drive to the next ‘T’ junction and turn right. Keep ahead on road to the main road (High Street). Cross with extreme care and turn left towards memorial and into Birdcage Walk.

Q.2 Who is remembered on the memorial?

Continue to end of Birdcage Walk keeping grass area on left. Directly in front is the entrance to Newmarket Racecourse and Newmarket Heath. The main grandstand is down this road. Cross Hamilton Road, keep to the right and continue straight ahead on road signed NO ENTRY to a wide area used for car parking. Turn right through barrier and walk along track on edge of heath, trees on right, open heath land to left. You may see horses training/exercising on the heath, give them a wide berth, they have priority. Walkers with dogs, please observe the dogs on lead regulation. At end pass through another barrier and turn right on track. Continue to junction with narrow road (Hamilton Road) and turn left. Just around the bend, on the right, is a large stable.

Q.3 How many Springs has this stable?

Continue to the next road junction and cross road with care to the bridleway opposite, passing between factory buildings. Turn right at the next road and at the pedestrian crossing lights take the footpath/cycleway on the right crossing open parkland. Where the paths divide turn right towards housing estate. Cross small bridge and turn left taking the footpath/cycleway with directions to the town centre. Cross junctions and continue with stream on left until reaching The Watercourse. Walk on the right to the next junction. Bear right with railings and continue round corner to end of railings. Turn left and cross road with care into St Mary’s Square and ahead to St Mary’s Church. Take footpath through churchyard and continue along road for a few metres. Turn left into the Memorial Hall Gardens and exit at far left corner. Turn left up the High Street back to the Clock Tower and end of walk.
