DIRECTIONS FROM NEAREST TOWN: The nearest town is Langport.
There is no public transport between Langport and Bowdens Crest but taxi's are
available. Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park is 1.62 miles from the
centre of Langport.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The nearest train station is Taunton and a
bus service runs between Taunton and Langport.
TERRAIN: This trails is not suitable for wheel or
pushchairs due to to the number of field footpaths used.
Leave Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park by passing between the reception/shop and the Mad Hatter Club Bar and turn left when on grass. Proceed ahead keeping hedge on left to pass by or cross stile in bottom right corner. Go ahead keeping fence on left, cross stile and continue on footpath to cross stile in hedge on left. Turn right and continue to cross stile in corner of field and then cross next field diagonally to left to reach gate in corner. Pass through gate to road and turn right. After 25mtrs cross stile in hedge on right and follow footpath around quarry to cross stile and continue down hill to reach road.
CROSS MAIN ROAD WITH CARE and continue down hill on road bearing round to the left walking to COMBE village and turn right at footpath sign through gate. Continue ahead keeping hedge on right, cross stile and proceed and continue ahead on path towards next stile cross and pass by keeping rhynes (streams) on left and right. Pass through gate, rhyne now on right only, go ahead through 2 gates and ahead bearing right towards girder bridge crossing two sets of double stiles at bridge. Immediately turn left and follow along side of rhyne on right, pass under viaduct and bear left keeping rhyne on right walking towards spier. At end of field turn right through gateway and passing wooden bridge on left and continue ahead on gravel path passing town gardens on left. In 200 mtrs turn left through gate on footpath to reach road. Turn right.
Continue along road to cross at pedestrian crossing and turn right and immediately before bridge turn left to reach riverbank. Follow river bank, sign posted Huish Bridge, for approx 500 mtrs and pass large car park cross footbridge and continue ahead to reach Huish Bridge across River Parrett.
Do not cross bridge but turn left and continue along track to reach road. Turn left and immediately turn right and then take the first track on left. Turn left through metal kissing gate and continue ahead across field to reach next kissing gate pass through and ahead on road to reach T junction. CROSS ROAD WITH CARE and turn right and wak along pavement to pass Eli's Public house (Rose and Crown) on left and take the next turning on left Pounsell Lane. Continue ahead through gate and ahead on left of field passing through two kissing gates continuing straight ahead along enclosed footpath, passing through two further gates to reach railway. CROSS RAILWAY WITH GREAT CARE and keep going straight ahead passing Kelways garden contre on right and at green gate go through kissing gate to right and ahead to reach main road. CROSS ROAD WITH CARE. Turn left and in 25 mtrs at end of wall turn right, go down steps and ahead on footpat through trees, soon fence on right and past gate. When fence ends keep going ahead. Through kissing gate to left of gate and onto tarmac road. Ahead to road junction.
Turn right and after passing Speed Limit signs, turn left over stile, keep fence on left to cross next stile. Fence on left, go ahead towards farm buildings, go over metal gate at "Paradise Cottage" and onto road and turn right. Go up hill to right hand bend by flag pole and firing range on left.
IF RED FLAG IS FLYING, USE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE BELOW***
If red flag is NOT flying, cross stile in hedge on left and go ahead keeping fence on left. When fence ends go ahead crossing stile in fence, and then straight across field and cross stile in hedge, straight ahead downhill to left hand corner of field to cross stile. Cross bridge and stile and turn right and go ahead keeping hedge on right crossing next 3 fields and 2 stiles keeping steam on right. Cross stile into wood, keep stream on right, ignore wooden bridge on right and when path reaches stream turn right over metal bridge cross stile and turn left. Cross stile with stream now on left and at end of house on left, turn left over bridge and cross stile in fence turn right stream now on right. Follow fence on left, to reach stile in hedge at end of field, cross stile and then lane then another stile. Turn diagonally right to cross field to stile in hedge onto road Turn left on road and in 100 mtrs turn right into Bowdens Crest and end of walk.
***ALTERNATIVE ROUTE IF RED FLAG IS FLYING:
Ignore stile in hedge on left and retrace your steps back down hill to "Paradise Cottage" and continue on road for a further 200mtrs to right hand fork in road. Continue ahead for approx. 2kms ignoring all side turnings, pass radio mast on left and after a further 100mtrs turn left into Bowdens Crest and end of walk.
