From Segedenum Roman Fort at Wallsend
on Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast
Landscape:
A riverside route along the Tyne gives way to predominantly arable farmland
above Tynedale. This opens out to the rough grazing upland section dominated
by the Whin Sill escarpment. It then gradually descends to the richer
pastures of Cumbria and finally the open salt marsh of the Solway Estuary.

PENNINE WAY

Landscape:

the Pennine Mountain tops, the rugged backbone of England. From the

PENNINE BRIDLEWAY
Length: 193 km

Middleton-by-Wirksworth, Derbyshire (High Peak Trail)
or the old Hartington Station (Tissington Trail)
Finish point: This depends on which way you
choose to travel along the Derbyshire to MTL section – if travelling
southwards, from the MTL, then the end points are the same as the
starting ones listed above. If you choose to just use the linear
southern section, then the finish point is at Summit, where it joins the
MTL, although you may be tempted to continue on round the Loop. Access
points to the MTL within 1.6km (1mile) of Walsden, Todmorden and Hebden
Bridge stations. For vehicular access, carparks at Clowbridge Reservoir
(5km (3 miles) south of Burnley), Watergrove Reservoir (4km (2.5 miles)
from Littleborough). At present the Settle Loop is not connected to the
rest of the Trail but it makes a great day's ride or walk. Parking is
available for users of the Loop, in Settle's Rugby club car park.
Landscape:
Green fields bounded by dry stone walls. Heather
moors, purple in late summer, hidden reservoirs nestling in the hills.
Ancient packhorse tracks skirting hills and sweeping into valleys. Mill
chimneys and canals offering a glimpse of past industries.

COAST TO COAST WALK

Landscape:
The route crosses three National Parks: the Lake
District, Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. It is scenic, but
high-level, including some fairly demanding upland stretches, and visits
only two towns of any real size, Kirkby Stephen and Richmond.

CLEVELAND WAY

Landscape:
The route crosses the North York Moors National Park to reach the coast at
Saltburn. From here it goes along the North Yorkshire coastline to Filey,
passing old fishing villages and lively coastal towns. Along the way there
is a wealth of history and heritage to enjoy. Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx
Abbey, Mount Grace Priory, Gisborough Priory, Whitby Abbey and Scarborough
Castle to name just a few special sites.

On its way the Trail passes peaceful water
meadows rich in wildlife, historic towns and many lovely villages. Easy to
reach by public transport, the Thames Path is accessible for walkers of all
ages and abilities.

Landscape: Wide grassy or flinty tracks on chalk downland,
mostly grazed by sheep on the hills with arable crops below. 100% within
Sussex Downs and East Hampshire designated Areas of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, soon to become a National Park. The western part of the downs is
rolling farmland, the West Sussex Downs are dominated by a steep, often
wooded scarp with views across the Weald below, while the East Sussex Downs
are classic open grassland running down to the sea cliffs.
