NATIONAL TRAILS
National
Trails are long distance routes for walking, cycling and horse riding
through the finest landscapes in Great Britain. They have all been created
by linking existing local footpaths, bridleways and minor roads and by
developing new ones where there were gaps. A total of 19 National
Trails have been created by the government, there being 12 in England, 3 in
Wales and 4 in Scotland with distances between 120 & 1014km.
As these
trails are so popular, the BWF now provides IVV credit for the 19 official
National Trails and the Coast-to-Coast Walk which is not an official
National Trail, has long been recognised by the BWF.
REGISTRATION
To register for a
National Trail you need to complete a
Registration Form and submit it together with the
registration fee of £1.00 to the
BWF Permanent Trails Officer.
On registration, you will be issued with a Report Book which you should
complete on a daily basis. Each day you should record the date,
distance walked, weather and collect a dated till receipt, shop/hotel stamp
etc. If you need more pages these can be
downloaded.
The information collected acts as a check that the walk has actually been
completed.
COMPLETION
On
completion of the trail or part of a trail you should send your report book
together with the validation fee of £5.00 to the
BWF Permanent Trails
Officer. He will issue the appropriate IVV credit for the distance
completed and event stamps as per the new IVV guidelines of 1 event stamp
for each 20 kilometres completed. Those who complete the full trail
will receive a full colour certificate of achievement. Those who only
walk part of a trail will receive IVV credit as detailed above but will not
receive a certificate.
