START VENUE:  Clock Tower at top of High Street, Newmarket   (Map 154 GR TL645635)
CAR PARKING: It is feasible to use any car park but we suggest parking on the gallops, half way up Warren Hill on Moulton Road (Map 154 GR TL655637).  This offers views over the town and is also a good position to see horses training.  Walk back down road and at junction turn right, clock tower is now directly in front of you.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Bus and train service within 1km of start.
TERRAIN: Urban areas, roads.
REFRESHMENTS:  Can be purchased at the start.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

From clock tower go down High Street and bear left under the arch way behind the Rutland Hotel.  Nell Gwynne's cottage is now on the left hand side and Newmarket Tourist Information Centre (Charles II Palace House) is on the right.  At next junction opposite All Saints Church turn right into lane leading to shops.  At High Street, turn left, the National Horse Racing Museum and the Jockey Club are now on the left hand side. 

Q1.    What is the name of the horse in front of the building?

At next road junction by traffic lights turn left down The Avenue.  Continue on this road passing Tattersall on the right hand side and then bear right onto Station Approach.  At end bear right again into Paddocks Drive to next T junction.  Turn right and continue straight on to reach the top end of Newmarket High Street.  Cross road with care to garage opposite and turn left towards memorial.

Q2.    Who was the memorial built for?

Bear right along Birdcage Walk to its end keeping grass area on left.  Directly in front is the entrance to the Race Course and Newmarket Heath.  The new main grandstand is about 1km down this road.  Turn right into Hamilton road and continue straight down, where road turns sharp right into Edinburgh Road ignore but continue straight ahead along a narrower stretch of Hamilton Road.  There are many stables on this part of the road and horse movements are likely to be experienced.  Just past a sandy track entering from left at right hand bend in road is a large stable.

Q3.    How many springs have the stable on the right got?

Continue to next road junction and cross to take bridleway on opposite side passing between factory buildings.  Turn right on next road and at traffic lights take footpath on the right crossing to open park land.  Turn right were paths separate, heading towards housing estate.  Cross small bridge and then turn left taking the footpath/cycle path with directions to the town centre.  Cross junctions and continue with stream on left until eventually reaching The Watercourse.  Walk on the right hand side to the next road junction. 

At railings turn right and continue round corner to end of railings.  Cross road with care into St Mary's Square and ahead to St Mary's Church.  Take footpath through churchyard and continue along road for a few metres.  Turn left into the Memorial Hall Gardens and exit at far left corner beside public conveniences.  Turn left up the High Street where there are opportunities for refreshments before returning to thee Clock Tower and the finish at the top of the High Street.
