ROUTE DESCRIPTION
Go past the church and pub, with pond on your right, to the crossroads. Cross over the main road and enter Springs Lane. Continue ahead as the lane leaves the village and then becomes a dirt track, following signs for the Trent Valley Way. Follow the track down under the Railway Bridge.
Q1. From the Rail Authority sign what reference number is given to this bridge?
Continue ahead after the bridge and follow the gentle incline to the top passing Maumhill Wood. Where the track bears left ignore the initial vehicular gaps to your right and look for the narrow gap. Go through this narrow gap and over the small wooden bridge. Continue ahead with the hedge on your right through two fields. At the bottom of the second field go through the gap in the hedge onto a grassy lane, Turn left and then continue ahead until you reach the tarmac road. Turn left along the road. As the road bears left towards the red brick house turn down the track to your right. (signed as Public bridleway, continuing as public footpath). Follow track down the hill until you reach the railway crossing with a Nature reserve on your right.
Q2. Who is the management of the reserve granted by?
TAKING EXTREME CARE cross over the level crossing. Continue up the track, passing through Caddow Wood. Approximately 100 metres after the end of the tree line on your left and before the track turns right, there is a wide grass track on your left. Turn left down this grassy track. As the grassy track descends it will become gravel and then tarmac. Continue to follow this until you reach North Leverton Windmill.
Q3
In what year was the windmill built?
(Look below the image of the windmill on the sign attached to
the building to the right of the windmill)
On leaving the windmill turn left and follow the tarmac track to the main road. Turn left and pass under the Railway Bridge and into the village of North Leverton. Go through the village passing, on your right, the playing fields, post office and the Royal Oak pub. Approximately 200metres past the pub, after the white house on your right turn left at the footpath fingerpost and go towards the church. Go through the church gate and bear left around the church and on through the gate. Straight over the grassy lane, to and over, the stile.
You are now entering farmland that frequently contains livestock – BEWARE OF ELECTRIFIED FENCING.
In the field keep the hedge to your right and follow to the top right corner where another stile is hidden in the hedge. Cross this stile and bear left towards the Gate with a stile on its right. Cross the stile and turn diagonally left. A fence section is evident in the far hedge with a stile. Cross field to stile. Over stile into meadow. Angle slightly right to the stile on the far side of the meadow. Over this stile. Diagonally right you will see houses and white barns, cross the field towards these barns going for the corner of the field. Approaching the field corner go through the large gap in the hedge to the left of the field corner. Continue ahead towards the power station cooling towers with the hedge on you right. At the end of the hedge continue ahead over the small bridge and turn right. Keep the ditch on your right, head straight towards the fence and houses. At the fence turn left and follow the edge of the field around until you reach the finger post and stile. Cross the stile into the lane, straight over the lane to another stile that should be crossed into a field.
You are now entering farmland that frequently contains livestock – BEWARE OF ELECTRIFIED AND BARBED WIRE FENCING – also be aware that the cattle often present in one or more of these fields tends to be young, curious and easily spooked. If you have concerns keep the fencing between you and them.
Keeping the field boundary to your right follow the edge of the field to the wooden fence/stile. Cross this fence/stile.
(The area in front of both gates can be dire. Float for the field beyond)
Then cross stile and continue ahead with the field border to your right. At end of first field cross over fence/stile and continue over second field and another fence/stile into third field. Continue ahead, still with field border to your right, to the corner of the field. Cross the stile, wooden bridge and stile into final field. Aim for the gate in the far right corner. Just before the gate note the stile on your right, cross over this and the road side stile to avoid the mud in the gateway. Cross over the road to the path and turn left. Follow this path past the school and arrive at the church and pub.
