NORTHUMBERLAND
Hadrians Wall Trail
(PT 45)
-
10km Grade 3
Organised by South Yorkshire Strollers
The wall built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian between 122-126 and was
extended by Septimus Severus a century later, to fortify the northern
boundary of Roman Britain. It stretched 120 kilometres (75 miles) from
Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness at the head of the Solway Firth
and the walk takes you along part of it. Fragments of the wall and
several stone mile stations remain. On a clear day the views are
wonderful. The walk starts at Housteads Fort which is one of the
most complete forts remaining today and there is an Information
Centre/Museum. You will require strong footwear as this is quite a
challenging walk and may not be suitable for small children and the
elderly.
