DIRECTIONS FROM NEAREST TOWN:  Guilford - Leave Guildford on A3 towards Godalming & Farnham in approx. 2 miles turn left on to the A31 which then passes over the A3 and after approx. 1 mile TL sign posted Puttenham. In approx. 100 metres TL and in approx. 300 metres Turn Right. into Puttenham and after passing the church and before you get to the Good Intent Public House TL into Suffield Lane. In 2km on right is Puttenham Common Top Car Park.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION (Route updated 3 May 2007)

Leave the car park with your back to the view and walk across the green picnic area diagonally to the left and join a clearly defined track turn left, ignoring two small tracks on left.  In approx. 300 metres you pass a green metal gate on your right. Continue on main track passing new house on right.  Continue on main track and descend to track/path crossing. Proceed straight across following the path in line with the overhead electric wires to proceed straight ahead on public bridleway, ignore the public bridleway on right but go straight ahead and in approx. 300 metres you will arrive at a small open area with a post with mauve arrow (self guided trail) on your left, turn right and follow the foot path for approx. 100 metres at track junction turn right "North Downs Way" continue on this path eventually joining track and tarmac lane where you descend to road junction. Go straight ahead and descend into Puttenham Village.

Q1 – What is the name of the lane on the left at the junction with The Street?

Continue along The Street passing "Step Cottage" on right and "Venzers Yard" on left followed shortly by The Good Intent pub on your left, turn right into Suffield Lane. (Before doing so however walk a further 100 metres to the church to visit the well which is just inside the gate on the left hand side. The last recorded use of this well was in 1750; it was then forgotten, and only came to light again in 1972, when the covering collapsed into it). In 50 metres on the bend just past the gates of Puttenham Priory on your left, enter the field straight ahead by going over stile, keep to the left of the field between fences. At small wood cross stile with yellow arrow. Follow clearly marked footpath to cross two further stiles and enter field. Proceed straight ahead keeping to the right of the field with the fence on your right. At far end of field cross a further stile between two oak trees and then proceed straight across the next field aiming for the trees in the dip ahead. Cross further stile and descend to next field bearing round to the right to reach metal gate and stile, go over stile and turn right onto road. Immediately after passing pond on your right, turn right and proceed up lane passing the farm buildings on your right. After passing house called " Lydling" on your right, turn left onto public footpath  Ignore track on right and proceed straight ahead over stile and keep to the left of the next field with fence on your left, then cross stile into an enclosed strip that leads to the road.  Turn Left into Shackleford and at road junction turn right towards Elstead. At next junction bear left by telephone box and proceed up Grenville Road, after approx. 100 metres turn left into Public Bridleway known as Rokers Lane, proceed up incline between bollards onto footpath and after approx. 600 metres and just past the farm buildings away on the left, turn right and follow public bridleway (do not go straight ahead on public footpath).   After 200 metres pass tennis court on right and reach four way road junction.

Proceed crossing this road junction with great care and take the third road on the right called School Lane and proceed down this lane. At T junction by Norny Farm turn right and after passing school on right and in approx. 50 metres turn left on to public footpath keeping wooden fence on right, followed by wire fence on left, shortly to reach a stile. Cross stile and bear half right (towards 2 o'clock) in the direction of the yellow public footpath arrow and continue walking at the angle of 2 o'clock towards a stile in the fence. Continue diagonally across the next field towards large stile and foot path bridleway crossing. Go over stile and cross straight over the public bridleway on to public footpath through the belt of trees and over the next stile. Proceed straight ahead up short incline on marked path towards the buildings of Peper Harow. Upon reaching drive turn right passing pond on the right and St Nicholas Church on the left (note the coffin rest underneath the inscribed lych gate.) Continue on road through the estate passing an Edward VII letter box on your left, proceed up lane through wooden gate and immediately turn left through kissing gate.

 Proceed up the field towards 2 o'clock (do not follow the track round to the left).  At the top of this field is a country lane and in the extreme left hand corner of this field adjacent to the lane is a hidden stile by an oak tree, which you proceed over (caution this lane is very busy) turn left and proceed on the right hand side of the road facing traffic to pass Warren Hill farm on right and continue on this road for approx. 600 metres ignoring the right turn to Cutmill and Puttenham but continue walking on main road towards Elstead and Farnham,  on your left is a farm named after a county.

Just past this farm you will arrive at the river Wey and immediately before the bridge turn right on the public footpath head away from the river and cross over stile, proceed on footpath with field on right passing on your right an old war time shelter, proceed straight ahead on pleasant woodland footpath cross stream and proceed straight ahead on track passing farm and at end of track pass through five bar wooden gate to reach road  turn left. After 300 metres at road junction turn left towards Cutmill and Puttenham. Continue on road passing "Sugarbaker Lodge" and "Sugarbaker House" on your left. Continue on road ignoring the public bridleway on the right opposite "Gatwick Lodge" continue on road passing "Gatwick House" on left. Ignore further public bridleway on right continue on road, crossing stream and going round right hand bend ignoring public bridleway which goes off on the left, after passing "Cutmill Platts" and at lane which leads to "Cutmill Cottage"  bear half right (2 o'clock) and proceed along a bridleway and continue until reaching cross track. Turn left and in 50 metres turn right  across small bridge and proceed ahead on path keeping the lake on your left and passing "Cutmill House" on your right to reach the drive. Turn Right and walk on the left hand side of the wall following the arrow to "Willow Cottage." Pass "Garden Cottage" on your right and follow drive round to the right keeping brick wall on your right, proceed straight ahead passing buildings on left and right and proceed straight ahead on to footpath and eventually reaching driveway. Turn Right and follow drive round to the left ignoring public bridleway on right pass "Rodsall Manor" on your right and proceed straight ahead on public bridleway, pass “Rose Cottage” on right and in approx. 30 metres at fork in bridleway take the left fork and in approx. 150 metres at post turn left and follow yellow arrow public footpath up steps following the path round to the right to reach road Cross road and enter car park and end of walk.
