PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
The nearest train station is
Bridgwater and a ‘first’ bus service no. 375 runs hourly from Bridgwater to
Wells and passes through the village of Edington. You need to request the
bus to stop at Edington cross roads where you will alight and then walk down
Holywell Road for approx. 500m in the direction of Burtle to the bottom of the
hill and after the bends sharply to the right, Holywell House is the 3rd
house on the left.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION (Updated January 2010)
From Holywell House TR into Holywell Road and continue to corner. As road bends
sharply to the left, continue straight ahead into Chandlers Lane and continue to
end and proceed straight ahead into Broadmead Lane ignoring Broadmead Lane on
the left. Continue on this lane passing Edington pumping station on right and
round bends first to the left and then to the right and after approx one km the
lane bends to the right round “Broadmead Farm” continue on lane passing entrance
to house on left.

Continue along lane to reach
T junction TR and cross road and in twenty metres TL on public footpath and
proceed on right hand side of field through opening in hedge and continue on
right hand side of next field cross stile and continue straight ahead still
keeping to right hand side of field turning left at end and continue up on right
hand side of field with hedge on right and after approx 250 metres TR through
gateway in hedge and continue straight across field to gate. Go through gate and
follow drove to reach road. TR onto road and immediately pass “Orchard Cottage”
on right and continue on road passing “The Crown Inn” on right.

the Licensees’ named over the entrance to the Inn?
Continue on road and after passing 30mph speed restriction signs and as road
bends to the right, continue straight ahead on road up hill with bungalows on
left and right. At top, at T junction TL with Royal Mail pillar box on left and
continue on road round to the right taking left fork and passing cottage on left
called “Sunny View” and at T junction with Manor Road TL and continue straight
ahead into Langland Lane. Ignore the ‘No Through Road’ sign and continue along
this lane passing farm on left and “Langlands Farm“ on right and on to drove
with fine views of the famous Glastonbury Tor ahead of you. On reaching three
gates ignore those on left and right and pass through middle gate with public
footpath sign on left hand side of gate. Continue ahead on left hand side of
field keeping hedge on left to corner of field. Pass through gap in hedge over
stile and wooden footbridge and continue straight ahead on left of field
with hedge on left and leave field at wide gate posted opening and proceed
straight ahead on public footpath ignoring the public footpath to the left and
continue along this drove passing “Kent Farm” on left and continue on lane and
as lane bends round to the left ignore footpath on right and continue on lane
and just after lane bends round to the right you will pass Monks Drive on left
and continue on lane and after passing 30mph speed restriction signs TR on lane
and continue for approx 150 metres to reach T junction.

What is the name on the side of the long building
on the left before the T junction?
At T junction TR and pass 30mph de-restriction signs and walk on right hand side
of road to face any oncoming traffic and after approx 200 metres as road bears
round to the left continue straight ahead on farm track with public footpath
sign towards Manor Farm with splendid views of the Mendip Hills on right. On
reaching Manor Farm take the track straight ahead passing the farm on right and
continue along this track following public footpath signs to reach wide grass
area with hedges on left and right and after approx 400 metres pass through gate
and continue straight ahead on right hand side of field with hedge on right to
reach wooden footbridge and stile. Cross over and continue ahead on right hand
side of field with hedge on right and at end of field TR over stile and wooden
footbridge and immediately TL and walk up left hand side of field with hedge on
left cross over three further stiles and continue ahead on pathway to reach
road. TL and at T junction with Lippetts Way TR and continue on right hand side
of road to face oncoming traffic to reach King William Road and “The King
William Inn”. TR into King William Road passing “The King William Inn” on left
and a large commemorative stone on the right.

What is commemorated by the large stone on the
right?
Continue down King William Road and at next road on left TL into Church Way. At church, pass through kissing gate on to path passing the church on right and through a second kissing gate and follow footpath to road. NB - The house on your right is called “Tarry House” due, it is said, to the fact that it was at this house that the Pilgrims rested (tarried) on their pilgrimage to Glastonbury. On reaching road, TR and cross over road walking on left hand side of road passing cottage on left called “Sunny Side” and after passing house on left called “Inglenook” and immediately before Catcott Primary School TL through small car park to reach footpath. Follow this footpath round through gate and pass the school playing fields on right, over stile and cross footbridge and immediately TR down through middle of field and after approx 100 metres TL over stile into drove and immediately TR over wooden bridge and further stile (or if not wet go through opening in hedge by the side of the stile) and proceed down right hand side of field with hedge on right. At bottom of field TL and continue on right hand side of field keeping hedge on right to reach and pass through metal gate. Cross wooden sleeper bridge and pass through second metal gate into next field. Continue ahead on right hand side of field with hedge on right to reach corner of field with ‘Bristol’ gate on right. TR through gate and visit the Holy Well on right before TL on road to return to Holywell House and end of walk.
