DISTANCE:  13km
ENTRY FEE:  £1.00 per walker (Cheques made payable to Thames Valley Walking Club)

START VENUE:  Bedford Square, Tavistock, Devon     (Map 201  GR SX482745)
DIRECTIONS TO START:  Take A386 from A30 near Okehampton or A386 from Plymouth to reach Tavistock.  Bedford Square can be found next to the Town Hall, Police Station and Market.
CAR PARKING:  Within 500m of the start.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT:  Bus service within 1km of start.
TERRAIN: Urban areas, minor roads, farmland and woods.

ROUTE  DESCRIPTION (Updated 14 Dec 09)

Leave Bedford Square and take Plymouth Road opposite, passing Bedford Hotel on left.  Continue to end of road & at roundabout with Drake Statue in middle, turn left.

Q1:  When was the square stone castellated gatehouse on right repaired?

Continue on road over canal and then River Tavy. Bear right at roundabout towards Plymouth for approx. 650m & as road bears left at roundabout, turn right on road, sign post ‘Superstore deliveries’ & ‘Walreddon’ (Brook Lane). Follow lane eventually passing "dead end" sign & bearing left at fork (signed ‘Walreddon’) to reach cattle grid. Continue ahead on track signed Bridleway downhill & at fork, bear left (signs Bridleway & ‘Buckator’).

Q2:  What is the number on the telegraph pole ahead on left of track?

Follow track & by house on right, bear right on track down to river. Follow track keeping river on right for approx. 1,400m to reach wooden gate. Go through first gate then follow blue marker between fences to reach tarmac track. bear left to lane.  Turn left & follow lane uphill.

Q3:  What is the name of the house on the right on the hill?

At t-junction at top of road, turn right & follow to reach main road. Go straight across main road WITH CARE taking road to right of public house. Go through gate & follow to reach t-junction. Turn left & follow road WITH CARE, passing ‘Ashlands Farm’ on right and ‘Whitchurch Methodist Church’ on left to cross roads by post office.  Turn right uphill (Church Hill). Pass church and continue on road to reach cattle grid. Cross cattle grid & at corner of wall on left, turn left keeping wall on left. Bear right when wall turns right, still keeping wall on left. At next corner where wall turns away DO NOT follow wall, but continue straight ahead to another higher wall on your left passing mound with building on top on your right and keeping wall on your left. At 5-bar wooden gate on left,  turn left onto road and left again downhill passing ‘Milemead’ on left. At t-junction turn left through gate by cattle grid and continue downhill to reach t-junction.  Turn left & follow road to reach public house.

Q4:  What is the name of the public house?

Turn right in front of public house, under bridge.  Ignore first turning on right to car park.  Immediately before next cottage on right turn right through metal gate sign post ‘Meadowlands Pool’. Continue ahead over bridge & bear right passing bandstand. At Cafeteria turn left over canal bridge to reach main road. Turn right and return to Bedford Square and the end of the walk.
