ROUTE DESCRIPTION
Leave the car park to the left hand side of the wood and to the right of the brown sign. Follow the edge of the wood, keeping it to your right, to reach lower car park. On reaching lower car park follow round the edge of it keeping it to your left and the bushes to your right. On reaching metal signpost follow the footpath to the right running parallel to the road. Pass running track to right and path eventually bends left to reach road. Cross road (Take Care) then turn right and follow road down hill to reach bridle path on left.
Q1) WHERE IS THE BRIDLE PATH HEADING FOR?
Take bridle path (Caution) and cross golf course following it. At track junction take left fork and follow bridle path to reach green metal gate. At gate turn left and follow footpath with tree line to left. Keep following path as it bends left through tree line and then right into trees. Follow path into wood (keep your eyes open there is wild deer in the wood to spot) and at path junction bear left keeping to marked path and at next junction also keep left. At following path junction keep right again following signed path and remaining in the wood. Emerge from wood and keep to path with fence on right and wood on left. Follow this path to reach road, cross road and take path uphill to left of road. Keep following path straight ahead to again eventually reach road and then cross road, patch of grass and road to take track opposite and follow. Continue on track through worlds strangest gate/stile and continue to follow track. At track junction bear right and keep forward as track joins from left. At track junction with sign post turn right.
Q2) HOW FAR TO SHROGGS VIEW POINT?
Follow track and after crossing bridge turn left and then turn right with track uphill. As you get to the top of the track turn and admire one of the best views of Temple Newsam House before continuing on and at green sign taking the stile on the left. Follow footpath to bench and then continue on path behind bench and heads downhill. Follow path through gorse towards yellow finger post. At fingerpost turn right and follow path with wooden boarding to left hand edge. On reaching fence turn left and over stile and continue following path into wood. At junction bare right and at next junction keep going straight ahead. Also keep ahead when track joins from left. Keep to left of large tree in clearing and follow track which bends to left and keeps going to reach the Carriage Drive. At Carriage Drive again look left to see Temple Newsam House in the distance. This was the original entrance to the house for any traffic and i'm sure you will agree that it would have been very grand indeed. Anyway continue ahead through squeeze stile onto bridle path and after approximately 75 meters go through squeeze stile in fence on left into wood and take right hand path. At path junction bear right and at cross roads turn right onto well defined path. At edge of wood turn left and follow path downhill with fence and field to right and wood to left. At bottom of hill cross bridge and continue on right hand path uphill to T junction. At T junction turn right and follow path still on edge of wood and as path descends turn right and go through Kissing gate by bench to enter field. Cross field and go over stile to left of metal gate and cross track again going over stile and onto fenced path. Cross next stile and continue along path and keep ahead through broken stile into wooded area. Then cross bridge to reach road. Turn left onto road and continue ahead past Methodist church to right then turn left into Darnly Lane and bear left at lamp post onto path.
Q3) WHAT IS THE NUMBER OF THE LAST HOUSE ON RIGHT?
Follow path as it bends to right and follow with fence to left to reach finger post. At finger post cross stile and continue on path across field. At bottom of field cross stile to path and turn left.
Q4) HOW MANY STEPS DOWN TO THE PATH?
At cross roads continue ahead (the rose gardens are to your left here and are worth a visit if you want to) and continue on path to right of small and large ponds before taking path uphill. Follow path uphill ignoring all turnings to reach Temple Newsam House.
Q5) WHAT IS WRITTEN ROUND THE TOP OF THE HOUSE?
The house contains lots of very interesting artefacts and information, and is very reasonably priced and well worth a visit. Whilst outside the fence looking at the house if you turn 180 degrees you can again see the carriage drive in the distance and get some idea of the scale of the grounds. If you then return the way you came up the hill and take your second path on the left you go past the front of the stables which now contain the cafe and toilets and if you cross the road and take the path uphill to the side of the trees and at its end head diagonally left across the grass you return to the car park and finish.
